Why Chromebooks need a browser teleprompter

Most Chromebooks — especially the ones handed out by schools and companies — are locked down. You can't install desktop software, and the Play Store is often disabled by policy. That rules out nearly every teleprompter app. A prompter that lives entirely in the browser sidesteps all of it: if Chrome opens, Lumi runs.

Lumi's web version was built for exactly this. Sign in with your email and the full voice-following prompter is ready — nothing to download, nothing an administrator has to approve.

What works in the browser on ChromeOS

  • No install, no admin rights. Runs at app.getlumi.pro in Chrome — the one thing a managed Chromebook always allows.
  • FlowPrompt voice-following. The script scrolls at your pace and pauses when you pause. Chrome asks for microphone access the first time.
  • Script at the camera line. Position the text under your Chromebook's webcam so your eyes stay on the lens.
  • Same account everywhere. Start on the Chromebook; the same login opens the macOS and Windows apps when you're on those.

Prompting happens in the browser; you record with your Chromebook's camera app or your usual tool. Want the built-in recorder and Meeting Mode too? Those live in the Mac and Windows apps.

Get reading in three steps

  1. 1

    Open Lumi in Chrome

Go to app.getlumi.pro and sign in with your email. No installer, no admin approval — it just loads.

  2. 2

Paste your script and place it under the camera

Drop in your text, position the prompter at the top of the screen near the webcam, and size the font so you can read at a glance.

  3. 3

Allow the mic and start talking

Grant microphone access so FlowPrompt can follow your voice, then read while you record with your camera app or present live.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a teleprompter that works on a Chromebook?+
Yes. Lumi's web version runs in the Chrome browser on ChromeOS — open the page, sign in with your email, and read. There's nothing to install from the Play Store or anywhere else, which matters on managed school and work Chromebooks where installs are blocked.
Do I need to install anything or have admin rights?+
No. That's the whole point of the browser version. It runs at app.getlumi.pro with no download, no installer, and no admin permissions — so it works on the most locked-down Chromebook.
Does it scroll with my voice on a Chromebook?+
Yes. FlowPrompt, Lumi's voice-following scroll, works in the browser: it moves at your speaking pace and pauses when you pause, so you're not chasing a fixed speed. It needs microphone permission in Chrome, which the browser will ask for.
Can I record my video on the Chromebook too?+
The browser version is a prompter — it scrolls your script while you record with your Chromebook's camera app or your usual recording tool. The built-in recorder and Meeting Mode (invisible on screen shares) are part of the desktop apps for macOS and Windows, not ChromeOS.
Is it good for students and teachers?+
Especially. School Chromebooks usually can't install apps, so a browser teleprompter is often the only option that works. Students recording presentations and teachers recording lessons can both use it with nothing to install.
How much does it cost?+
Lumi is $9/month or $27 once. One purchase also covers the macOS and Windows apps if you move between devices.
